Lucy was born on May 14, 2011. She became critically ill very quickly, and had emergency surgery on May 15, in which her colon was removed. A second surgery on May 16 re-checked other gut organs and created an ostomy. The doctors are hopeful that the ostomy can be removed and her remaining bowels can be reconnected within the next 6 months. She remains in critical condition, still requiring life support and massive doses of antibiotics. But the doctors and nurses seem pleased with her progress and we have reason to believe we will be able to bring her home in 3-6 weeks.
